From earth to plate
Did you know that the name of the town of Gardanne comes from the words “Gart”, of Germanic origin and meaning garden, and “Ana”, from Latin and meaning water?
Gardanne has been a fertile land for centuries. In this respect, agriculture occupies a place of excellence.
Between local produce, an agroecological park, traditional restaurants and a large Provencal market, you’re bound to find something to delight your taste buds!
Gardanne market
The Gardanne market is an institution. Three times a week, it comes in different sizes: small on Wednesdays, medium on Fridays and one of the biggest in the département on Sundays! It’s got all the charm of a Provencal market, and you’re sure to find what you’re looking for! Stalls of pretty dresses, butchers, beekeepers, grocers, market gardeners, fishmongers, cheesemongers… the sound of voices laughing and shopping carts rolling over the cobblestones. A market with a southern flair!
Gardanne “Suiram” long beet
Thanks to the hard work and perseverance of Gardanne farmer Claude Crudeli, the commune can be proud to have seen the birth of a product of excellence, now acclaimed by top chefs: SUIRAM long beet.
Let us tell you a lovely story of tradition, a story rooted in time and reminiscent of true values: the land, heritage and transmission.

Valabre Agricultural High School
The Lycée Agricole de Valabre is located on land that once belonged to the Gueydan family, especially the Marquis and his wife.
In 1882, when the Marquise de Gueydan died, she bequeathed to the town of Gardanne all the property she had inherited from her husband, but with one condition: the obligation to found an “Agronomic Institute” in Valabre. Today, the agricultural school has been replaced by the Lycée Agricole.
The Lycée Agricole d’Aix-Valabre farm produces wine under the IGP des Bouches-du-Rhône (Red, Rosé and White) and AOP Côtes de Provence (Red and Rosé) appellations, beer in collaboration with the Aquae Maltae brewery in Aix-en-Provence, and organically grown chickpeas and fruit juices.
Retrouvez les produits du Lycée Agricole dans la boutique de l’Office de Tourisme «La Fabrique Sauterelles».
