Parc de la Poudrerie Saint-Chamas - Miramas
The Parc de l'Ancienne Poudrerie Royale, a Natura 2000 protected natural site covering over 100 hectares, is accessible from Saint-Chamas or Miramas-le-Vieux. During the summer, it is open to the public on weekday mornings.
The Poudrerie Royale was created in 1690, then definitively abandoned in 1974. For some thirty years, it remained closed and off-limits to the public, giving way to a natural environment of remarkable biological diversity: a reedbed, a wetland and a dryland composed mainly of Cistus, Broom and Hackberry.
The priceless architectural and historical heritage has remained in place, partly redeveloped and secured: the former powder factory presents strange landscapes with a sometimes baroque, sometimes romantic ambience: ruins covered in ivy, a mysterious tower carved into the cliff...
As nature re-colonizes the site, visitors can take in the fabulous sights along the paths.
