Traditional French manufacture:
The santons are made entirely of clay in the Aubagne workshop.
They are molded by hand, then retouched one by one to give each one a special touch.
All santons are fired in an electric kiln at a maximum temperature of 980°, with a 24-hour firing cycle.
Decoration is always carried out by hand, each time bringing a different expression to the figures. It takes at least 15 steps to finish a face.
Next comes the dressing process, with reproductions of 18th-century clothing made on site.
The final touch is given by the accessories (fisherman's basket, shepherd's sheep, lavender bouquet, etc.).
The museum:
You'll be able to admire over 400 unique pieces created especially for the museum and staged according to different themes: from the nativity to the life of Jesus, not forgetting the huge crib representing the Provencal village backing onto the Garlaban, the Provencal wedding, the Toulon penal colony and the game of pétanque.
Plus over 200 santons from 19th and 20th century collections.
