From earth to plate
Did you know that the name of the town of Gardanne comes from the Germanic “Gart”, meaning garden, and the Latin “Ana “, meaning water?
Gardanne has been a fertile land for centuries. In this respect, agriculture occupies a place of excellence.
Between the local produce, the agro-ecological park, the traditional restaurants and the large Provencal market, you’ll find plenty toenjoy!
Gardanne market
The Gardanne market is an institution. Three times a week, it comes in different sizes: small on Wednesdays, medium on Fridays and one of the biggest in the department on Sundays! It has the exceptional character of the Provence markets, and above all, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for! Stalls of pretty dresses, butchers, beekeepers, grocers, market gardeners, fishmongers, cheesemongers… the sound of voices laughing and shopping carts rolling over the cobblestones. A market that feels right at home in the South!
Suiram” long beet from Gardanne.
It’s thanks to the hard work and perseverance of Gardanne farmer Claude Crudeli that the community can congratulate itself on the birth of a product of excellence, now enjoyed by top chefs: SUIRAM roasted beet.
Let us tell you a beautiful story of tradition, a story rooted in time and reminiscent of true values: those of the land, heritage and transmission.
Rootbeet to be found at the Gardanne market on Sunday mornings.
Valabre Agricultural High School
The Lycée Agricole de Valabre is located on land belonging to the Gueydan family, and more specifically to the Marquis and his wife. In 1882, on her death, the Marquise de Gueydan bequeathed to the town of Gardanne all the property she had inherited from her husband, but with one condition: the obligation to found an “agricultural institute” in Valabre. Today, the agricultural school has been replaced by the Lycée Agricole. The Lycée Agricole d’Aix-Valabre farm produces IGP Bouches-du-Rhône wine (red, rosé and white) and AOP Côtes de Provence (red and rosé), organic beef in collaboration with the Aquae Maltae brewery in Aix-en-Provence, organic fish and fruit juices.
Find Agricultural High School’s products at the Tourist Office store “The Grasshopper Factory”.
